Drew Daywalt Duncan loves to color and just wants to create artwork with his favorite colors, but his crayons are anything but happy! When he goes to take out his crayons in class one day he finds a stack of letters filled with complaints from his crayons. But, the hands down winner of the favorite page in the book was… Peach. Sweet little Peach was too embarrassed to even come out of the box because he was naked.

Blue needs a break from coloring so much water and sky pictures, while Pink just wants to be used. While the book is marketed for agesI am not ashamed to admit, I quite enjoyed the book myself.

This story presents a great opportunity for kids to practice their reading, writing and spelling skills of the 12 colours mentioned in the book. Here is my 4 part suggestion: Tell them that you are going to read it together.

Whenever you come across a color word, point to it and have your child read it. It will be pretty effortless for them as each color is written in its own color in the book.

Free Printable After reading the book, I created a 3 page free printable activity you can download below. The first page presents additional reading practice of the color words.

Of course they will have to read the word to know which color the crayon needs. If they can handle some tracing, then have them find a marker of the correct color to trace each of the words before coloring the crayons. Great practice for their reading and writing skills.

Spelling Fun Perhaps at another time they can do the next page and a half of the free printable. Sorting or grouping all the letters by their colour is next. The next step is unscrambling the letters. Will they remember how to spell their favourite color?
